Small Models Move to the Edge

On-device AI is turning latency, privacy, and energy limits into a new model-design discipline.

A growing class of AI tasks no longer needs a round trip to a data center. Speech recognition, image understanding, and lightweight assistants can increasingly run on the device in a person's hand.

The shift is being driven by better mobile chips and model-compression techniques. Quantization, distillation, and careful architecture choices let smaller systems preserve useful capabilities while fitting tight memory and power budgets.

The cloud will not disappear. The emerging pattern is layered: routine perception and private context stay close to the user, while demanding work moves outward when the value justifies the cost.
